Big Ups - Dallas vs. The Koffin

**Special shout-out... Happy Birthday, Dallas!**

Here is the final installation in the CrossFit 603 "Big Ups" series. As some background... we traveled from Sacramento to San Francisco CrossFit with our friends Matt and Donna of MaD CrossFit to meet Adrian Bozman (Coach Boz) and take the Koffin's lunch money. When we arrived, Boz told us the creator of the Koffin - Larry Gallagher himself - was on site building some plyo boxes. How. Cool. Is. That?

The Koffin is essentially two big boxes, the top of which slides down over the bottom. They've built peg holes into both pieces, with brackets that slide into the holes from the outside. You raise and lower the top to adjust the height, and hold it in place with the brackets. At its highest, the Koffin measures 58"... just shy of 5 feet. It's... tall. And until we got there, only four people in the whole world had managed conquer its highest setting. (The requirements of "conquering" the Koffin are simple - jump from the ground, land with both feet on the box and stand all the way up at the top. They don't care if you run, skip or pas de bourrée your way up to the thing - just get UP there.)

I don't want to give anything away, so I'll let you watch the video to see how it all transpired. A big thank you to Coach Boz and San Francisco CrossFit for their hospitality, and to Larry Gallagher for some damn fine craftsmanship.

Awesome!

Off Topic, back at Mer:
omg - I have hit the wall. My shiny paleo ball has completely faded out. I even had a dream last night about having a picnic in the grocery store. Blanket, middle aisle in the store, total gluttany. Fear not, I have not strayed! I am starting to think through how I will start adding back in foods that I think I miss so I can evaluate their impact, but I am not 'excited' about some crazy cheat day full of cheese, chips, beer, etc. I guess I got that out of my system last night! :)

Good lord, people... get off the "dead stop" thing. This isn't a Games Qualifier met-con precisely judged box jump. This is a freakishly tall handmade contraption designed to challenge you to simply GET ON TOP OF IT. It's about putting your feet up on something HIGH and standing the smuck UP. It doesn't matter how you do it.

Okay! Mad props on the freakishly tall box jump!

I still say, "pshhh" until he can vertical jump over ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

Ha! That sounds like a challenge, Veronica...

Nice job Dallas! With the wider landing surface (and a few inches higher) how did it compare to the edge of the truck?

And that did look way to easy for you. They do need to build something higher. :)

Oh my GOSH that is SO FREAKING COOL! Way to go, Dallas! Can't wait to see what you jump on next! :D

Jamie - home stretch! We're almost there!!!

I was going to reintroduce grains first - pasta seems easiest. Then sugar in my coffee, then dairy, then legumes. So, by that weekend, I'll hopefully know how those foods affect me and can limit myself on them.

We're so close! >happy dance!<

Way to go, Dallas - the Koffin is no cupcake, and you dominated it.

How much do you weigh, by the way? (As a fellow sixfootfourian, I'm highly curious...)

Nice hops. :) Last time I tested my max box jump, about a year ago, it was a measly 42.5", though that was from standing...

Yesterday was day 17, and it was a rough one. I had a cat dissection from 9am to noon, and a) I'm a cat person and b) the smell of them being associated with something that looked like meat put me off my lunch, big time. Then in the afternoon I went from feeling slightly queasy to craving junk, so I crushed a ton of almonds and several apples, which I guess is better than the alternative. No desire for a vegetable of any kind the whole day, which is really strange for me...

Jamie said...

@ Jake - when I had to do the cat dissection (years ago!) we named our specimen Fluffy, 'cause it wasn't. Ughh! :) Way to adapt to a crazy scenario.
I too lost interest in veggies for a bit near the end. But, the taste for veggies is back with a vengance and I am back to eating a good variety again. Hang tough - it is totally worth it!

@ Mer - Well, our time has come. Nice work girl! I think we both have today and tomorrow before we can officialy reach around and pat ourselves on the back, but... here is one for ya now just because! :) I am sticking to clean food through Sun am. I am having all of my measurements done Sat am so I can compare the #s. On Sun I am headed to the gym to do a WOD I did immediately before I entered the cave so I can compare performance too. Then, I am going to straight to Starbucks and getting my Skinny Caramel Latte. But, I don't miss my caffeine... this is just the only rebellion my taste buds have been asking for. They earned it!

@Jamie

You go, girl! I'm so proud of you! :D

I bought some hummus and some honey at the grocery store last night. No touchy until Wednesday, though. I'm clean-eating until Saturday when two of my good friends are marrying each other (wine and wedding cake!). I think kyou deserve a baby pat on the back today and then a HUGE one on Wednesday when it's officially official. :)

<3 Keep up the great work!

@Jaime:

We did it! Hooray!!!!

I'm totally eating veggies with locally made, no preservative crap added hummus right now. ;)

@ Mer -
Yay - that sounds yummy! You go with your bad a$$ cave girl self! (insert pomp and circumstance here)

I am so proud of us, and Jake is not far behind. I picked my first deviation from plan, which I am sticking to through my follow up measurements planned for Sat and Sun. I did this one particular WOD immediately before entering the cave. Once I have finished up doing that one again on Sunday I am going to Starbucks and getting a Venti Caramel Macchiato (sp?) with whipped cream and extra caramel... I am not going to do the usual - drink a Grande Skinny Latte while I drive to work pondering my day. Oh no, this one is special. I am going to sit outside and consider all that this 30 days gave me. Other than that indulgence, I am staying mostly clean. I do think next week I will add back in some of my vitamin/mineral supplements. Which brings up a question for All.

Where do I find supplements that are not so full of crappy additives? In particular, I miss my Biotin.

My other add back in on a regular basis item is going to be dressings that do contain vinegar.

Even without having my final stats yet, I can say It was totally worth it!

Congrats Mer! Way to go. I am so psyched up!! :)

First, I'd question whether the "supplement" is really necessary. For example, daily biotin requirements are relatively small, biotin is found in many foods, and the body is able to recycle much of the biotin it has already used... so maybe if you're eating well, you don't need to supplement at all.

Your best bet is to stay away from GNC and drug store brands, and order supplements on line. Read all the ingredients, too, and do some research if you aren't clear on what they're putting in your the pills.

I take a few digestive supplements made by NOW Vitamins - Robb recommends their Super Enzymes too, I believe.

My husband and I are starting the 30 day paleo challenge tomorrow. Can we eat deli meat? It seems on the line....

Jamie said...

Thanks Melissa. There are many supplements that I no longer am even interested in. For the others, looks like I have some research to do. I will start with poking around on Robb Wolf's site for info. Hope you have been well!

@ Heather - Congratulations! I hope you both get as much out of the experience as I did. I think the best answer I have for you is to read the ingredients. If it contains anything other than the meat, then no. But, if it is a product like I found a Trader Joe's that is really just cooked and sliced chicken, then yes. I was not able to find many deli products that fit the bill, but they may indeed be out there.

@Jamie - you go, girl! Enjoy that Buxx when you get it. ;) I enjoyed my hummus while I was eating it...a few hours later, I was pretty miserable. Needless to say, I won't be eating legumes on a regular basis again. :-P

I haven't tried grains or dairy yet, but sugar makes me feel sluggish and achey the next day.

@Heather, woohoo! Good luck!

Thanks for the info and the cheers:) We celebrated yesterday with the end of hamburgers (for him, my main course was actually semi paleo friendly which I caught sht for, lol), fried and blizzard (couple beers for him).

So today we start eating clean! Started off well. I pouted mildly about the lack of cream in my coffee and the loss of my morning yogurt parfait, but did enjoy my omlett with peppers. I ate lunch meat because it is what I stocked at work (I was mildly stressed last night when I read that lunch meat was bad). Going forward I'm eating previous nights dinner for lunch. I'm not a huge leftovers person, but I have my almonds to get me through (Blue Diamond, a splurge a $8 a lb, but yum).
