If you're a word geek like me, you'll love the
WordCount web site.
WordCount is an interactive presentation of the 86,800 most frequently used English words, ranked in order of commonness - 1 being the most common, 86,800 being the least. Observing closely ranked words tells us a great deal about our culture. For instance, “God” is one word from “began”, two words from “start”, and six words from “war”.
Here are some examples of words and their ranking:
- Snatch (14,784)
- Intoxication (31,944)
- Premium (4,837)
- Feral (26,822)
- Diesel (5,935)
My favorite part of this site are the unintentional stories told by sequential words. Take, for example, "Schoolmaster Syrup Fridays" (17,163 - 17,165). I mean, let me bust out the plaid skirt and the knee socks, because that's a super hot kick-off to my weekend.

Find your favorite words and post any cool combinations you find to comments. Careful, though. It's fucking addictive (62 - 3,048 - 10,577).

I love that my two favorite words to use when a situation makes me unhappy are together: whatever (741) and fine (742). I can't stop laughing.

Don't know if it's addictive, as I think I've stopped after looking through the top 100 for the first three non-generic words and coming up with "more time people" (54-66-81).
